UFG returns for another year of Fighting Games!

As the new academic year begins, UFG returns to bring a premiere experience for UK University students that play fighting games! In January, we successfully ran our debut Spring Split on the NSE site, and followed it up with our Summer Split that featured every game on the EVO 2019 Lineup! We’ve successfully engaged in streaming with help from members of the community providing both commentary and production, and our Discord server has reached over 450 members! Now we’re here to start a new year, and with new titles and updates announced over the Summer, it’s certain to be a big one!

A big announcement we have to make this Split is that we are an NSE Affiliate League, which means your placements will earn you British University Esports Championship points! Now you can represent your University and society in our fighting game tournaments! We’d like to thank NSE for giving fighting game players a stake in the UK Esports landscape, and helping competitors stay involved!

Our lineup this split is Tekken 7 PC, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, and Mortal Kombat PS4!

Tekken 7 has been growing in the UK as of late, and the UFG community is no exception! With Season 3 having just been released, we’re excited to see new faces (alongside old!) showing off new moves and tech! Street Fighter V returns in parallel, recently receiving new characters in the Summer update, showing that Capcom aren’t done with their latest entry in the franchise yet. And finally, we have Mortal Kombat appearing in our lineup again, this time on PS4! This marks the first console-only tournament game we’ll have run at UFG, so bear with us as we deal with some unfamiliar territory!

With regards to Smash Ultimate, earlier today the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate University Championship was announced by Nintendo in partnership with NSE, which will feature both Singles and Crew Battle formats! UFG have been involved in making sure that the formats and rulesets are up to the expected tournament standard, and can give it our full approval. This means we won’t be running a Smash Ultimate tournaments ourselves, but we see this as the natural progression of the University scene and we hope you give it your full support!

UFG will still provide support for the community, and remains a place for everyone to meet and train with each other, so don’t fret! We hope you’ll be able to spot familiar faces from the UFG community in the upcoming Championship, and we’ll still be streaming the games and offering opportunities for members of the community to produce content.

The start date for all UFG tournaments is 14th October and sign-ups are open now! Make sure to join the UFG Discord to stay updated for our games, and keep an eye on official NSE announcements for details regarding Smash in the NSE Discord!
