Our May Society of the Month is the Lancaster University Gaming and Esports Society - Congratulations!

We chose Lancaster for holding an event called "Roses" against historical rivals from the University of York, making use of Intel's Event in a Box.

We reached out to Lancaster's General Secretary, 'Han_Bythewoods' to learn more about the annual event and how the Intel Event in a Box helped support them. Here's what they had to say:

The photos from the Roses event looked incredible! Could you share more details about the event and what took place?
Roses is a 3-day weekend event where Lancaster University go against the University of York, much like the Battle of the Roses! The first university to reach 172.5 points wins! In the past, we have not been able to host an in-person event, and as such have missed out on Roses. But this year, we were able to secure Intel's "Event in a Box" which provided us with 10 portable PCs to set up for the players to compete! The event ran from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm, where we had three games playing:

  • League of Legends: Best of One
  • Overwatch 2: Best of Three, voted on by the members of both universities
  • Counter Strike 2: Best of One

It was a close call, but overall York won 2-1 with the wins being Overwatch 2 and Counter Strike 2.

Was there any standout moments or your personal highlights from the event that you'd like to share?
Being able to watch all the players just play at their best. It was incredible to just have them recognised to be playing on one of the biggest stages in the North-West.

Is there anyone you want to give a certain shout out to or who helped bring the event to life?
I would love to give a shout out to the Executives of the York and Lancaster Gaming Societies, for coming together and creating an amazing event. In particular Skye, the esports coordinator of the Lancaster University Gaming and Esports Society. She put her whole body and soul into this event and deserves recognition for all the effort that she put in. I want to also give a special thank you to Intel and NSE for giving us the opportunity to do this event with the "Event in a Box." This equipment was integral to the event and was incredible to use.

Do you have any exciting plans next year?
Next year we will be doing the same but this time it will be in York! Same stakes, different games and all the intensity of Roses! We hope to see you all there!
