The British University Esports Championship (BUEC) Spring season is over and with it, the 2022/2023 academic year! The games are finished and the points have been totted up. A record number of 111 universities entered the race to be crowned Esports University of the Year. The competition has been even closer than ever this year with second to fourth place being incredibly tight, however one university still reigns supreme amongst the pack.
For the fifth year in a row, the University of Warwick is the Esports University of the Year for 2022/2023!
The University of Warwick has finished with an impressive 3,433 points, this is however 603 less than the previous year. Will we see a new university crowned in the near future?

Top 10 Summary
The University of Warwick places comfortably at the top of the table with the University of Exeter putting in a fantastic performance coming in second place, followed closely by Durham University in third, the University of Southampton in fourth, and then the University of Portsmouth in fifth.
The University of Warwick has some hot competition on its tail this year as we see the gap between first and second narrow significantly in comparison to last year.
The University of Exeter has been phenomenal this year, especially as they had far fewer teams than their peers. Coming in second place, Exeter had HALF the amount of teams as the University of Warwick and at least ten fewer teams compared to the rest of the top five.
Durham University continues to improve and make a name for itself, showing huge potential as they move up to a podium position for the first time, narrowly missing out on second place by 61 points.
The University of Southampton and the University of Portsmouth continue to be staples in the top ten, consistently putting in some great results across the board as we see both making the top five this year.
Continuing from last year’s season, the University of Birmingham and University College London also feature in the top ten once again, sitting in ninth and tenth place respectively.
Compared to last year, there are three new universities joining this exclusive top ten group; the University of Kent, Lancaster University and the University of Nottingham all displayed impressive performances the past year to make it in. This is the first time the University of Nottingham has broken into the top ten after narrowly missing out over the past four years so a huge congratulations to them.

Best Regional Esports Universities
There has been fierce competition right across the UK with the regional rivalry hotting up. The standings for this season are:
BUEC, Insomnia i70 and Spring Finals
The British University Esports Championship continues to be one of Europe’s largest organised esports competitions and is the UK’s most active grassroots gaming community in the country with an estimated 15,000+ matches played across this year.
We held our live LAN Spring Finals at the Insomnia Gaming Festival where we had our own dedicated University Esports area. This featured a stage for players to compete, a spectator area for attendees to support their favourite universities, a Monster Energy truck packed to the brim with cans to keep everyone fueled, an Intel booth where you could compete for the fastest lap on their racing rig and a Pringles stand where you could earn yourself some Pringles by taking part in Pringles’ gaming challenges.
Speaking of, a big thank you to all of our partners for their consistent support and belief in our community; Intel, Monster Energy, Pringles, BUCS and SpecialEffect.
For the first time this year, we were also excited to take one of our Women and Non-Binary BUEC Cups to our LAN finals at Insomnia. On Friday morning, we saw the top two Women and Non-Binary teams compete in VALORANT. The University of Nottingham and University College London battled for first place on our stage in close games, with UCL winning overall.
A warm welcome to those who have newly joined the community this year and thank you to the players and teams who have come back to compete. It was amazing to see so many of you at the live finals and we can’t wait to hold more live events for the student community in the future.
Keep your eyes and ears open for sign-up announcements for our summer season at the beginning of June.
