The University of Northampton have been selected as the Pot Noodle Society of the Month for May!

We spoke to their president, Anya, to find out more...

Congratulations on being chosen as our Pot Noodle Society of the Month! We'd love to hear about what you've been up to.

Thank you so much! The society’s been pretty busy with the new committee entering post and us working on a whole bunch of cool things for the next academic year and sending our first year off with a bang! This month multiple tournaments ran which were all lead by groups of students on the Esports course like Augmented Mayhem which was a League ARAM and Royale Rumble for Clash Royale! We also hosted our annual general meeting to collect feedback for the year and work with our members to plan for the future.

Wow, despite it being exam season you guys certainly seem to have been busy! What was your favourite social?

I think either Too Many Games or the Megathon were my favourite events for sure. Megathon was a collaboration with Tresham college ran by their students against our club, and it was super fun competing against the up and coming esports students!

Too many games was another super cool event where games were chosen by spin wheel and players had to step up to randomised challenges like chess, connect four, fall guys and more traditional esport titles like Rainbow 6! It was a format that isn’t very common and brought a really exciting twist to a tournament. One of our players, Harrison took the event lead for this one, so massive props to him cause it was awesome!!

Sounds like a lot of fun! From my understanding, the society at Northampton has only been running for a super short period of time, and yet you've accomplished so much already. What advice would you have for other socieites based on your success so far?

Yes, the club has just finished its first year and it has been so amazing. We ended up with over 150 members after our freshers fair which has made us the largest sports club at University of Northampton! My biggest tips would be to be consistent, cause engaged members will give you as much effort as you give them, and then collaborate - cause we’re all pushing to make esports as good as it can be and can help each other out!!

Aside from your insanely packed social schedule, your society flagged discussion around men's mental health this month. Do you have any plans to build on this initiative, and more generally any plans in place for next year?

Our executive welfare officer with our SU recently hosted a men’s mental health chat which gave our male students a chance to talk in an open space about their university experiences. We also this year partnered with Play Aid to deliver their mental health course during our Gameblast event earlier in the year.

Yes, we plan to scale up our awareness training and charitable efforts, through drinking and gambling awareness to volunteering opportunities, we want to give back to our community as much as possible.

This next year we have a very passionate committee who are ready to jump into loads of plans. Coming up we have a Mario Kart tournament planned for freshers, biweekly community game nights alongside our NSE nights and at the end of the year, we’re hoping to take home Club of the year at the Northampton Student Union sports awards!

Loving the ambition, and looking forward to seeing what you guys get up to in the future! To wrap it all up, given your love for socials, if you had to run a Pot Noodle night, what would that look like?

If we were to run a Pot Noodle social night, it would definitely be in our SU building, the Engine Shed. We’d be enjoying our favourite flavours and taking advantage of the new Nintendo Switch to play some Mario Kart or Just Dance which is always popular with our lot.
