Queen's University Belfast have been selected as the Pot Noodle Society of the Month for July for their commitment to hosting socials for their members throughout the summer period, including LANs and a Riot Play Club!
We spoke to their president, Synth, to find out more...
Congratulations on winning Pot Noodle Society of the Month! Could you tell us a little bit more about the LANs you have run?
Absolutely! So far, we've hosted two LANs this year - one for Counter-Strike 2 and one for League of Legends, both packed with serious prize pools to raise the stakes. Traditionally, we've only done a CS2 LAN the last couple years, but we wanted to shake things up this time and cater to more of our player base - hence the League LAN! And we're not done yet - we've got an Overwatch 2 LAN coming up in just two weeks. In terms of organisation, it was a team effort involving our incredible society officers, along with fantastic support from groups like IECS and Nativz. We also pulled in some amazing production crew and casting talent to really elevate the whole experience. It's been equal parts chaos and magic - and we wouldn't have it any other way.
What are your future plans regarding these LANs? Do you think you'll keep doing them?
Oh, 100% the LANs are here to stay! They've been a massive hit, both in terms of turnout and the pure fun of it all. Our goal is to keep growing these events, getting even more people involved, and (fingers crossed) securing bigger prize pools, fancier setups, and maybe even more game titles down the line. If the hype keeps growing like it has, we're in for an exciting few years ahead.
Amazing, we'll definitely keep an eye out! As well as the LANs, you also ran a Riot Play Club - how did you guys find hosting this?
Hosting the Riot Play Club was an absolute blast. It gave local players a chance to connect over their favourite Riot titles, whether that's League, VALORANT, TFT, you name it. We gave away some cool Riot merch (always a crowd-pleaser), and it just had a great vibe overall. Right now, we're aiming to run them on the last Saturday of every month down at Reboot Gaming Café, and honestly, we can't wait to build it up even more.
Looking forwards, now that the new academic year is coming up, what's next for the society? Do you have any plans already in place?
Going into the new academic year, we hope to continue expanding our competitive presence by fielding more teams across every game. We also aim to host more in-person events, including casual gaming nights and LAN socials, to help strengthen community relationships within the society. We are committed to creating a welcoming space for all gamers, regardless of skill level, and we plan to make better use of our Twitch channel to showcase society matches, events and tournaments. This year, we're also actively exploring sponsorships and partnerships to help support our growth and provide even more opportunities for our members.
Definitely sounds like a good plan! Now it's time for everybody's favourite part: the Pot Noodle themed question. In the competitive spirit, how many Pot Noodles do you think you would be able to consume in one sitting?
I am an absolute noodle FIEND, so anything less than five in one go and I'd honestly be disappointed in myself. Chicken & Mushroom and Curry are always in my top rotation, and I still can't decide which one reigns supreme. Maybe I'll have to do a noodle showdown someday just to settle it once and for all!
