Intel Event in a Box has been a huge hit amongst students since its inception, and we thought we'd take a look back on the past year and some of our favourite events on campus. Intel Event in a Box is a piece of kit that travels the UK and contains PCs, monitors and peripherals to help support student tournaments, LANs and events.

With twenty events taking place over the last academic year, here are some of the events we thought were amazing:

Merseyside LAN Derby - University of Liverpool

The University of Liverpool Gaming Society hosted the Merseyside LAN Derby, where top teams from the University of Liverpool faced off against the top teams and players from Liverpool John Moores to see who the best university across the Merseyside was.

Women/Marginalised Genders Unity LAN - Durham University

Durham University hosted a first-of-a-kind event for Women and Non-Binary members of their community, focused on trying out esports in a welcoming environment and helping to grow the W&NB community at Durham. They played various titles, encouraging people to try different games they may not have played before, as well as an introduction presentation talking about the W&NB community at Durham.

Aston University VALORANT Series - Aston University

Aston University hosted its first-ever LAN tournament thanks to Intel Event in a Box; the event was recorded and cast for audiences to enjoy. The tournament featured a double-elimination bracket format; teams of five players competed to become the Aston VALORANT Champions. Matches were best-of-one, with players being assigned fairly to teams so that all had a similar average rank, making sure all teams had some high-ranked players and low-ranked players.

North-East Esports Festival - Durham University

Hosting their second Intel LAN event, Durham University Esports and Gaming (DUEG) welcomed around 120 people from across the UK to the North-East Esports Festival. This was a student-led celebration of esports and gaming, aiming to highlight the strengths of the industry in the local area and the north in general; it featured a range of talks, networking opportunities and tournaments for students. Check out the video about the event below:

Magnificent East Midlands Esports Showdown - Loughborough University

Loughborough University hosted the MEMES (Magnificent East Midlands Esports Showdown). The event was a great success, bringing together students from six universities to compete against one another. This was a varsity event compiling Lincoln, Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Derby, DMU and Loughborough. This was hosted in Derby last year, and plans to tour around each of the participants each year.

SouthLANder Varsity Event - University of Southampton

The University of Southampton hosted its famous SouthLANder varsity event for 2023. SouthLANder comprises southern UK universities, including; Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and more. Unlike previous years, the event spanned a whole weekend instead of a single day. The extra day was used to host a dedicated LAN for members of the society. Southampton were crowned CS:GO champions, with Portsmouth taking the win in League of Legends.

UoN LAN - University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham hosted a range of fun events throughout the weekend of their event, from custom 10-mans to rival communities clashing in the heated CS:GO vs VALORANT tournament to determine which is the better fps game. It also provided a great boot camp for the W&NB VALORANT team to play on LAN prior to the NSE live finals.

Charity Livestream - York St John

York St John ran a charity livestream using their kit and managed to raise a whopping £500 for the charity Project Hope. The stream comprised a wide variety of segments, including VALORANT custom matches, sim-racing, Beat Saber and much more!

Bulls v Gorillas Varsity - University of Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire hosted a varsity vs Northampton in their theatre with lights, production, and commentators. The live stream features a huge range of segments, with competitive CS:GO and VALORANT, but also had a casual gaming area outside that focused on a couch co-op style of game and had a mixture of consoles.

Essex v UEA Varsity - University of East Anglia

UEA hosted a knockout varsity vs Essex's Esports club, where both teams battled it out across three titles; CS:GO, Rocket League and Overwatch. After a thrilling day of games, the home team, UEA, emerged victorious overall with a 2:1 win!

And so, that wraps up just a few of the amazing events students have run in the 22-23 academic year using Intel Event in a Box. With the scheme returning for the next academic year, we can't wait to see what bigger and better events societies will come up with!
