Games Innovation Challenge 2022: Winners Announced

University and college students from across the country have been competing to be crowned the winner of the Games Innovation Challenge of 2022!

Sponsored by Barclays, the challenge asked students in the UK to create the most innovative game in eight weeks with the submitted entries being judged against technical quality, look and feel, entertainment, social impact and innovation. 

The judges were really blown away by the variety, ideas and potential of the games submitted and the games that have won awards in the 2022 Games Innovation Challenge are listed below.

Gameplay Award
Winner: University of Suffolk entry ‘Kingdom Run VR’

Kingdom Run VR is an endless, action-adventure runner where players will explore trapped tombs with on-rails movement while dodging traps, collecting gems, and eliminating enemies with katanas.

The judges highlighted its easy to grasp concept paired with high entertainment value.

Design Award
Winner: London College of Communication entry ‘Super Delivery’

This game is a 2.5D one-button game simulating a delivery experience. The delivery driver has to transport goods from the start point to the destination, avoiding all of the dynamic obstacles on the road.

With extensive supporting work, the judges were impressed with the thought and detail that went into the look and feel of this game and its assets.

Social Impact Award
Winner: Middlesex University entry ‘Carbon 12’

Carbon 12 is a first-person chemistry crafting and puzzle-solving game that is designed to teach GCSE students about the fundamentals of chemistry.

This game scored highly in the social impact category as the game's primary objective is to educate the player on atomic structures and the processes involved in atomic bonding but to do so in an entertaining and meaningful way.

Unity Choice Award
Winner: Middlesex University entry ‘Carbon 12’

Carbon 12 also won the Unity Choice Award. The judges were very impressed with the way the game and assets were designed as well as the whole look and feel.

Epic Unreal Choice Award
Winner: University of Portsmouth entry 'The Race to Space!'

This game is a one vs many co-op game where players must work together to power the ship. One player must defend the planet as a giant planetary guardian.

The judges liked the multiplayer aspect, character design and also how the map evolved throughout the game

FIRST PLACE
Winner: Middlesex University entry ‘Carbon 12’

Already winning two other awards, Carbon 12 is the overall winner of the challenge. The judges were blown away by the way with game looked, the voice over, the attention to detail and the concept.
