Aston University has joined forces with its student gaming community to host a Valorant Esports tournament. The event, which was open to all students, took place on 11 and 12 February 2023.

The tournament was held on the University campus and organised by student volunteers from the Aston Gaming and Esports Society (AGES). Through the Intel Event in a Box scheme, NSE and Intel UK were able to provide 10 sets of high-powered PCs (Phantom Canyon NUCs), monitors, and peripherals like headsets, keyboards and mice.

Featuring a double-elimination bracket format, teams of five players competed to become the Aston Valorant Champions. Matches were best-of-one, with teams randomly assigned.

The event marked the first LAN tournament in Aston University history and was recorded and cast for audiences to enjoy. LAN stands for Local Area Network and this means instead of playing over the internet at home, players are situated in the same room, connected to the same network.

Professor Aleks Subic Vice-Chancellor & Chief Executive of Aston University, said:
“I am really pleased to see our students taking the initiative in driving our e-sports agenda.  This tournament is just the beginning of what we hope to achieve in developing e-sports at Aston University.”

Aston Gaming & Esports Society, said:
“The University hoped this tournament would foster community building and growth of the esports scene on campus.

“With over 100 students turning up for our first LAN weekend event, we’re proud to ignite our mission of bringing more in-person events to life. This is just the start of our journey to build a thriving esports community in Birmingham.”

Anurag Prasad, who is studying Mathematics and Computer Science, said:
