Rainbow 6 Siege - Midseason Review - Summer

The third week of the NSE Summer Championship returns tonight as several of our Summer teams look towards securing their spot in the playoffs. With the end of week 2 marking the mid-way point of the Swiss stage, what better time to reflect on the season so far? Join us as we give you the low-down on the standings so far and the highlights from our weekly livestreams.

While many consider the Summer tournament to be far more casual than its Winter and Spring counterparts due to its short duration and relatively low turn-out, Spring Champions Staffordshire aren’t taking the competition lightly. Catching up with Staffordshire’s captain before their first game, it’s obvious that they only have one goal in mind:

“I only want to win. Nothing less. Summer might be an easy win but I’ll still be going all out.” - MaXD, Captain of Staffordshire Stampede.

With many of the UK’s best University teams, such as Spring’s runners up Lancaster, not taking part in the Summer tournament, will anyone stand in Staffordshire’s way as they hope to win a second consecutive season?

With only four more points to be earned over the next two weeks, several of our teams are now out of contention for the 6-7 point threshold for a position in our playoffs. Inevitably, we expect our four finalists to be one of the top 6 teams currently in the standings. But if the Spring Season taught us nothing else, we should not discount the teams currently sitting at 2 points; for them, the next two weeks will be do or die: Win everything or face elimination.

While insignificant for the seeding of matches, it’s worth noting that the placement separation between teams with the same number of points is down to their Opponents-Match-Win-Percentage (OMWP), a statistic commonly used in Swiss tournaments to determine the difficulty of a team’s progression through the tournament.

Week 3 promises to be an exciting one as our final two undefeated teams face off to be the likely top seed of the tournament’s finals. Join us over at our livestream at 7pm BST to see whether Liverpool have what it takes to take down the Spring Champions. If you missed out on previous weeks of our stream, check out the highlights below:

Stream Highlights

With Staffordshire having high hopes for this season, we thought we’d join them in their opening game as they took on their first challengers for the title: Sunderland. With a dominant performance on one of their best maps, it was no surprise to see Staffordshire reign victorious in a decisive 7-1 sweep on Clubhouse.

Despite a seemingly easy victory over Sunderland, however, the Staffordshire side has some visible signs of rust since their Spring victory back in April. They’ll need to iron out such issues if they hope to claim their second consecutive title:

For our second game we joined Liverpool and Southampton following both of their dominating performances in the first round. Despite starting on the defensive side on Kafe Dostoyevsky, Southampton seemed out of their comfort zone as they struggled to find their footing in the game until a beautiful double kill with a Nitro-Cell in the third round lead to their first victory of the half:

Unfortunately for Southampton, their first victory of the half was not the change of fortune they'd hoped for as they struggled to successfully defend against Liverpool’s well-practiced and clinical attacking strategies. Entering their defensive half with a 4-2 lead, Liverpool continued their dominant performance as they quickly rounded out the game with three consecutive defensive wins to win the map 7-2.

With week 1’s results providing some preliminary seeding for week 2, we decided to spectate a few teams from the middle of the standings. Up first, we joined Cardiff in their game against Sussex on Clubhouse. With both teams sitting at a 1-1 win/loss ratio so far in the season, they’ll be eager to pull away from the rest of the pack and neither team gave an inch as we spectated the best game of the tournament so far.

Starting off well, Cardiff managed to capitalise on Sussex’s impatience and overaggression to win the opening round. Despite coming close to winning subsequent rounds, they struggled to deal with the defender’s roaming presence as efficiently and forced themselves into clutch situations which they failed to win:

Sussex ended their defensive half with the expected 2 round lead, but Cardiff quickly fired back as they won their opening defensive round thanks to an incredible ace from SirEarlGreytea:

This game inevitably proved to be a game of the better defending team as both sides struggled to find their feet on their attacking halves. After narrowly missing out on winning several of their attacking rounds, Cardiff seemed far more comfortable on the defence. Despite losing a player due to connectivity issues in the 8th round, Cardiff managed to win two more rounds with their player disadvantage as Sussex failed to capitalise:

Cardiff would go on to win their 4th and 5th consecutive defensive rounds to come back from their 2-4 deficit at the turn of the half to win 7-4, ending the match with another outstanding Ace from Sardine:

Cardiff will be relieved that their connectivity issues didn’t cost them the match. For Sussex, however, this match comes as a learning opportunity as they will need to improve their attacking coordination if they hope to win against stronger opponents.

Our second game of the evening took us to the slaughterhouse of Coastline as Reading took on Plymouth in a messy clash between two frag-heavy teams on a frag-heavy map. Lasting a total of only 30 minutes, we witnessed a mixture of meme-strategies and pure gunskill as Reading managed to win every single one of their attacking rounds. While Plymouth earned themselves a consolation prize by winning their first attacking round, Reading quickly closed out the game in a swift 7-1 victory.
